Service of Lessons & Carols (Focus, Jan 2016)
On a brisk Sunday evening, December 13, UBC’s congregation and Bay Area guests gathered in anticipation to experience UBC’s Worship Ministries’ annual Christmastime service—an adaptation of a liturgical work that has been celebrated around the world for almost a century. Originating at the King’s College in Cambridge, A Service of Lessons and Carols traditionally features nine Scripture lessons with accompanying carols, and UBC’s annual adaptation is a Christmastime favorite enjoyed by many.
Through beautiful music and the spoken Word, the sounds of Christmas emanated throughout the Worship Center, which was draped in the warmth of greenery and the glow of white lights. The timbre from each reader’s voice brought Old and New Testament scriptures about the prophecies and birth of Jesus to life. UBC’s Chamber singers, orchestra, and adult bells and choirs graciously shared their talents as they performed melodious Christmas carols, anthems and instrumental pieces. At the end, a festive reception was held in the Fellowship Hall. It was truly another heartwarming and spirit-filling performance.
