The Rime of the Ancient Mariner

The Rime of the Ancient Mariner

Passage: Jonah 3

Speaker: Dr. Steven Laufer

Series: Living the Story: Jonah

Category: Sunday Services

Keywords: fasting, forgiveness, repentance, salvation

Jonah clearly wasn’t an enthusiastic messenger to the city of Nineveh, but proclaim God’s message he did. The citizens and the king responded in a very unexpected way, heeding the words of Jonah, turning from their evil acts, and fasting in hopes that God might turn from his path of judgment. The Assyrians’ actions of repentance and contrition move God and cause him to change his course of action, form judgment to forgiveness. Here, in the form of a foreign king and his city, rests one of the Bible’s strongest pictures of repentance and forgiveness, and it reminds us that the pathway to salvation in this life and the next passes through both.
