I Am What I Do

Passage: Ecclesiastes 2:18-26

Speaker: Rick Carpenter

Series: Overcoming Suburban Addictions

One of the saddest funerals we could ever attend might be one that is focused on the deceased person’s job, rather than on the joys of life, love and relationships. For too many of us living in the suburbs, we tend to believe our jobs are our key immortality symbol. We buy into the false narrative that our significance in life and beyond comes from the roles we play for other people. Perhaps it is because of the confidence, security, and even power the money we make from our jobs provides us, but these are truly only illusions. As believers, our identity is not in what we do but in who we are in Christ. Just as Solomon had more reason to be identified by what he did, in the end, it ultimately proves to be a vain pursuit of personal glory when God’s glory should be our primary concern.
