A Community Unified

Series: Faces of Community

The request for and selection of a king was the start for the twelve tribes, but just having any king would not completely unify the tribes. It would have to be the right king. And so it was David, the second king of Israel, who would lead the twelve tribes to truly become one nation. His strategies were quite simple: he worked to create peace, he sought to give the people a shared capital, and he established a place for a common religious identity. Today the challenges facing God’s community in the areas of unity are astounding. We should look back to the brief period of unity under the kings Saul, David, and Solomon to see what we can learn, both good and bad, about these challenges. (1 Sam 8:4–8, 16:7–12; 2 Sam 5:6-6:5)
